TEAMS are at the ready to take part in this year’s Relay for Life with a lockdown difference!

The sponsored two-day event would normally take place on the rugby field at Lux Park, with groups of participants taking it in turns to walk in relay for 24 hours around the track.

This year, of course, it wasn’t possible, but undaunted, organisers have stepped up to make an online Relay possible.

While some teams will be setting up tents in their gardens, others will be incorporating laps into their daily exercise.

The opening ceremony and other key moments of the weekend will be streamed live on Facebook – look for Relay for Life Cornwall – Liskeard.

One team member who is continuing in her efforts is Della Lavers of Creative Academy Cornwall. Della will be doing a 24 hour ’Quiltathon’ over the relay weekend, and everyone can help. She’s asking people to buy a personalised patch, which will be decorated and added to the quilt(s) she makes over the two days! Visit www.quiltofhope.co.uk to find out more.

Whether you’d like to join in as a relayer, or you’d like to simply support the event, it’s not too late to join in and help to raise money for Cancer Research UK, says chairman Alex Putna.

She’s encouraging everyone to tune in to some or all of the activities over Saturday and Sunday May 23-24. Here’s a guide to everything that’s happening virtually!

Movie Quotes Quiz – help raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK with this fun quiz to do with family and friends online. Emails [email protected] to get a copy of the quiz: results will be posted on the Relay Facebook page Saturday 6pm

Saturday

Penny Piles: dig down the back of the sofa, in pockets and long forgotten handbags to find all those coppers you never knew you had. Make a pile, take a snap and post it on the Relay page – and donate the money to Cancer Research UK!

Steps Challenge: Will it be 10 steps round the living room or 10,000? Tell us how many steps you’ve managed to fit in during your hour, the day, or the weekend - Update on facebook at 4pm.

Opening Ceremony 12 noon, with survivors’ celebration at 2pm.

Look out for prompts for Fancy Dress laps – fun to see what others are doing online!

Candle of Hope ceremony 10pm: Everyone is welcome to join us for this special ceremony. A time for rememberance of those who have died, and recognition of those who continue their fight; always an emotional highlight of the Relay weekend, even more poignant at these times.

Candle bags are available near the entrance of Liskeard Co-op thanks to Barry Hill and his staff for those who wish to decorate their candle bag with a commemoration to their loved one. Normally the Relay track is lit by the glow from the lit candle bags throughout the night until the tealights fade as dawn brings the new day. This year people are invited to join us by lighting their own decorated candle bag at home, or a simple candle at home, whatever suits their situation, and share that with us on Facebook. There will also be a photo gallery of those loved ones whose pictures we have received - these can be emailed to [email protected].

Right through the night Relayers take turns to walk, and the party continues via everyone’s ’Silent Disco’, this year sharing their themed laps fancy dress via Facebook.

Sunday

Wake & Shake at 9am

Future Pledges 11am: We will share the pledges our Relayers intend to do to help get us closer to finding a cure for all cancers.

Closing Ceremony 12 noon
