LISKEARD'S Relay for Life has raised £200,000 for Cancer Research since 2008.
But with numbers down on the volunteer committee, the future of the event is now in jeopardy.
Liskeard is the only town in Cornwall to host a Relay for Life, and the 24-hour fundraiser with live music, a fun team atmosphere and poignant candlelit ceremony attracts participants from far afield.
Penny Woodman, Cancer Research UK's local fundraising manager for Cornwall, said: 'I would like to thank all those who have been involved in the Liskeard Relay for Life for the fantastic amount they have raised and their massive contribution to our vital work. If you count the donations made in kind, our total is closer to £300,000 – a phenomenal amount for Liskeard. The community spirit around South East Cornwall is fantastic.
'However, we do need more volunteers if the Relay is continue.'
There are many good reasons to be part of the team, said Joy Parker, herself a cancer survivor and long standing committee member. She explained: 'This type of fundraising is rewarding in so many ways. It's great fun, very sociable and, most importantly, supports a truly great cause. Our fundraising efforts contribute directly to helping Cancer Research UK scientists continue their research into cancer.
'I would like to appeal to people from across South East Cornwall to volunteer their time and join the Liskeard Relay for Life Committee.'
