THE latest edition of the Cornish Times is on sale now and some of the items inside include:

- With the Russian invasion of Ukraine in everyone’s thoughts, a couple from Pengover who have relatives running an aid organisation for refugees in Prague, have been inundated with generous donations of supplies. They are now preparing to embark on a road-trip like no other, heading first to West Cornwall, and then to Sheffield to collect further supplies, before continuing on a 1,000-mile drive to the Czech Republic where aid is so desperately needed.

- Meanwhile, Anna, a maths teacher originally from Poland who is now living and working in Looe, has been transferring monetary donations made by well-wishers in South East Cornwall to her mother back home, so items can be bought for the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees who have crossed into Poland.

- In Saltash the town council has made a statement of solidarity with Ukraine and people in the town are calling for people to join them for a walk across the Tamar Bridge which will see contingents from Cornwall and Devon meeting midway for a two minutes’ silence and prayer for the people unwittingly thrust into this terrible conflict.

- And in her latest weekly Westminster Watch column, South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray also expresses her support for the Ukrainian people and condemnation for President Putin’s actions, while praising those speaking out against the invasion and explaining how the economic ramifications of the conflict are likely to reverberate right across Europe.

- In other news, the future of Widegates Village Hall, which was under threat just a few weeks ago, is now looking more positive - we explain why.

- Read the harrowing story of how a social care systems failure led to a Trewen man with Multiple Sclerosis being left without care for several days while his sister and Cornwall Council staff worked around the clock to find a solution. Fortunately there is now light at the end of the tunnel.

- We have pictures of enthusiastic volunteers rolling up their sleeves to do some serious clearing-up at Summerfields Park in Saltash.

- As the renovation project for Liskeard’s Library looks set to restart after the pandemic, the Real Ideas Organisation is issuing a call-out for experienced local building contractors and a site manager to help make the refurbishment project happen.

- The chair of Callywith College in Bodmin has received an OBE at Windsor Castle. We have a picture of him meeting the Princess Royal.

- Two women from the East Cornwall Harriers group have merited special mention after coming first in their respective age groups in the Looe 10-miler.

- In our Community section, learn about how a project in the Tamar Valley aimed at improving local people’s well-being and job prospects is seeking more volunteers.

- This week’s paper has an 8-page Farming section, including two pages of words and pictures from the weekend’s Point to Point event at Great Trethew, Menheniot. We also have a vet’s column on avoiding illness in lambs, the latest Market Report and a feature on the Tamar Valley Country Store.

- This week’s Looking Back page continues the round-up of places in East Cornwall which feature in the ‘Exon Domesday’ record compiled two decades after the 1066 Norman Conquest – including the situation in Liskeard and places on the Rame Peninsula which until 1844 were regarded as little enclaves of Devon adrift on the Cornish side of the River Tamar.

- Our seven page Sport section leads with an exclusive interview with Saltash United chairman Dave Bishop following his resignation – he tells us his reasons for stepping down.

Also read about the busy few weeks that lie ahead for Cornwall-based Snooker star Andy Hicks as the 2021/22 season draws to a close, and about the weekend in store for Liskeard Darts ace Keelan Kay who is set to play Matt Good in round one of the 2022 Cazoo UK Open in Minehead.
