SHOCKED residents in Higher Market Street, East Looe, were woken from their sleep in the early hours of Monday morning, by the crashing of glass and loud revving of a car engine, followed by the ringing of alarm bells.

Going to their windows they witnessed a ram raid taking place at Michael Spiers the Jewellers, but as quickly as they phoned the police the two masked thieves had fled. Their haul was gold jewellery valued at tens of thousands of pounds. Included were assorted earrings and rings on green and cream display pads. Damage to the door is estimated at £600.

The car used was a red hatchback, but as yet the make has not been identified. Police are examining the remains of lights from the vehicle which were smashed as it was driven against the door at speed. A wooden post had also been used as a lever and was taken from outside the RNLI lifeboat station on the quayside.

Some rings believed to be connected with the robbery were discovered on Tuesday by a female member of the public in a car park at nearby Pelynt. Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Andrew Knight at Torpoint Police, who is dealing with the case. Phone him on 0990 777 444 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
