TWO pupils from Liskeard Hillfort Primary School armed themselves with bin bags and set about tidying up a conservation area. The area, on Old Road, Liskeard, is managed by the school and Conservation Trust for the benefit of the local community. However, noticing that there was litter lying around, nine-year-olds Aaron Pearce and Ryan Coton volunteered to carry out a survey and collect up the rubbish. To their horror – and that of Aaron's parents, who helped the boys – they collected three bin liners full of litter, mainly cans, bottles and paper. 'We were disgusted,' said Aaron. 'We use this area during the school day for our science work. Children could be cut by broken glass or cans, and litter is dangerous to wildlife.' Headteacher Kath Vineer was delighted and impressed by the boys' hard work and awareness of the need to look after the wildlife. 'Our school works hard to promote care for the environment and these boys used their time at a weekend to put into practice what they see as important,' she said.
