Saltash has some new murals, one at St Stephen's County Primary School and two at Saltash Leisure Centre. The one at St Stephen's School is 30ft long and 4ft high and David Whittley – a well known, local artist who painted the mural on the side of the Union Inn at Waterside depicting local and famous people who had connections with Saltash – is the artist at the school with 300 young helpers from the reception class to Year Six helping him. The mural's theme is 'Our World' and it is based on original designs and ideas generated by the children and includes sporting and leisure activities. It was constructed from different sized panels and, on completion, they were fixed on the wall inside the school along the main corridor. David has painted the main designs and the children are colouring the mural using acrylic paint. Several other techniques are used including patterning and stippling. The murals at the Saltash Leisure Centre have been painted by Gary Hammond, of Torpoint, who swims regularly in the Saltash pool and one of the murals depicting the under water sea creatures is on the side of the childrens' pool. To paint it, Gary had to put on his swimming trunks and stand in the water to paint. The smaller mural of a dolphin is by the side of the steps, near the pool. The murals are also painted in acrylics. Gary woks at HMS Raleigh, and he has done several art projects but would like to do more.
