A PRIMARY school pupil from South East Cornwall has designed a mascot for international yachtsman Sam Goodchild. The offshore sailor is preparing for his main event of the year, the Solitaire du Figaro, which will visit Plymouth for the first time this summer. An official naming ceremony for Sam's boat Team Plymouth took place yesterday at Sutton Harbour in the city. Now with pupil William Storr's mascot, Stan the Shark, on board, the Falmouth-born 24-year-old is hoping that his performance in the month long solo race will pave the way for success in the 2016 Vendee Globe competition. William, who attends St Dominic Primary School, was the winner of a competition to design the mascot. The youngster was delighted to meet Sam and present him with the mascot during the naming ceremony. Team Plymouth had its first competitive outing at the Solo Concarneau in France last weekend. Now William and his classmates are looking forward to following Sam's progress with the aid of a geo-caching 'bug' sewn inside Stan the Shark.
