TWO grants worth £80,000 have given Callington Town Council's Launceston Road Park project a boost. The park is set to be transformed into a multi-age recreation area worth around £150,000 with a range of equipment, including a 20ft-tall climbing wall, hard surface sports area and barbecue pit. A total of £46,000 has come from Viridor Credits, which will be used for the climbing wall, and £34,000 from the County Environmental Trust for a toddler area. The equipment designs were chosen by students at Callington Community College. 'It's a great start,' deputy portreeve Denise Winfindale said. 'A lot of hard work has gone into this and I think for a change it is the youth who have chosen the scheme.' The students were given a choice of equipment they could get and shown the prices. Along with cllr Winfindale, the students looked at the site before going to the town hall to choose the appropriate area. The plan for the park came from the Callington Town Plan survey which went to all Callington residents. 'The aim for the town plan is doing the bits that we can achieve quickly first,' cllr Winfindale said. 'Some of the projects are very long-term and quite costly so we are doing the little chunks that we can achieve.' Work on the play area is set to start next spring.
