GENEROUS customers at Callington's Tesco store donated nearly £2,500 worth of food last weekend.
Foodbank volunteers, including members of the Royal British Legion, handed out wishlists of selected long-life food to shoppers as part of the nationwide collection, the biggest-ever in the UK.
In all 1,486 kgs of food (one and a half tonnes) was handed in at the store, equivalent to £2,496 in value, with Tesco topping it up by 30 per cent to make a total of £3,244.80.
Callington Foodbank project manager the Rev David Jewell said: 'We would like to give a huge thank you to all shoppers who donated food and to Tesco for their welcome and the opportunity to encourage the residents of Callington to donate food. We're very pleased that we've received nearly a tonne and a half of food – our largest collection.'
Tesco manager Pete Downing said: 'Our customers were incredibly generous when we held our last food collection in December, so we're amazed to have collected an even bigger total this time around.
'All our colleagues and volunteers from the foodbank really enjoy the collection as it gives us a real opportunity to help local people who are in need,' he added.
