ALMOST £1 million has been given to Callington Community College to build a new all-weather football pitch and changing pavilion. The pitch is set to bring in almost 1,000 players to the college site from local clubs – trebling the number who currently use the site. The college received the £988,106 funding from the Football Foundation and the project will see a floodlit, full-size artificial pitch with a modern pavilion built at their Launceston Road base. The grant is the largest handed out by the Foundation in the region. The money is part of a £1.2 million scheme which will also see a proper road created to the East Cornwall Tennis Centre and floodlights for the outdoor courts. The scheme will establish the sports college as a leading provider of sport in the area, complementing the existing facilities at the college, which include six pitches for junior players, five a side areas, gymnasium and a sports hall. Links will be established between the college and local primary schools and facilities will be open for use by the wider community outside curricular hours. A number of local clubs including Callington Town Football Club, Callington Colts, Stoke Climsland Women's Football Club will also be using the college for a new base. Funded by the FA Premier League, the Football Association, Sport England and the Government, the Football Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities, developing football as a force for social cohesion and as a vehicle for education in communities. Headteacher of the college Steve Kenning said: 'This is fantastic news. 'It now means that our community sports facilities are almost complete - all we need now is a swimming pool!'
