LOOE town councillors are to commission a full review into how the council operates at a cost of £1,000. The review is necessary, said mayor David Bryan, to 'assist full cohesion within the council, which has been beset by disagreements'. A full review, subject to costs, was agreed by a vote of 10 members with one abstention. 'The review will be carried out by an independent team and will look at the council from the way we do our meetings to our finances – the whole way we operate,' said cllr Bryan. 'It's to try to get the council pulling the same way and make sure everybody at the council is happy with what we're doing. It also gives the public the chance to see how the council operates. 'For quite a number of years we've had discussions on whether the council should move out of its present accommodation. There have been some disagreements about whether we should move out of the Guildhall or continue to pay rent to the East Looe Town Trust,' cllr Bryan continued. 'The idea of this review is that it would help us decide how we should operate.' Looe was unlike other councils locally in that it does not own its own offices or the Tourist Information Centre premises. The estimated cost of the review by Cornwall Association of Local Councils is £1,000. Cllr Trevor Crane said he felt a review would also help people in the town to understand the role of a councillor and what a town council can and can't do. 'It's easy to criticise via Facebook and other media reports, but we hope the review will give an insight into the amount of time and effort that goes into a councillor's job,' he said. 'Due to budget cuts from Cornwall Council, there's a lot more the town council has been asked to take on, and it has extended the workload.'
