I AM writing to highlight the way war veterans of the Torpoint branch of the Royal British Legion are treated by the younger ones of the branch. I am a 90-year-old hero war veteran. I paid for a wreath to be laid in memory of eight of my shipmates that were killed in a Mediterranean action. I am sorry I cannot lay the wreath myself so it was always laid by a HMS Raleigh recruit. In the 2006 laying, the young recruit's remark to me was: 'Thank you, sir, for giving me the honour of laying this wreath'. I was very proud of that youngster. I am sorry I cannot lay the wreath myself, I cannot bend. I suffer with a war wound which is why I now use a scooter. I have a piece of shrapnel in my spine and, if they tried to move it, it would severe the spinal cord. No, I don't make a fuss of it. I still worked for 28 years with it there and at times I had to wear corsets but still succeeded.
