Protesters and councillors have attended a site meeting to see the likely impact of a proposed wind turbine.

The proposal comes from Cornwall Light and Power, which is hoping to gain approval to use the site as part of the Government's green-er energy drive. The site is between Caradon Hill and Kit Hill at Redland, Pensilva.

A helium balloon was raised to the height of the turbine to give councillors a clear view of the actual height.

Danny Mageean, chairman of the group Green Caradon Against Turbines (Green CATS), said: 'We have a petition that has been signed by more than 400 people who are against these plans. We are not against the production of greener energy but we feel that people are being misled about the amount of energy these turbines produce. They will not replace power stations and what happens when there is no wind?'

Bob Morgan, development manager at Cornwall Light and Power, said: 'This was purely a fact-finding exercise for the councillors on the planning committee. Cllr Bernie Ellis, chair of the Caradon planning committee, made it quite clear at the start that this was not an opportunity for people to discuss the pros and cons of the project.'

Substation

The plans also include the construction of a substation and the widening of an existing track during the building work. The plans will go before the planning committee on Wednesday, December 17.

A helium balloon was also raised at the Eden Project, St Blazey, to show the height of a proposed wind turbine on the site. The balloon was 'flown' following concerns expressed by local residents in nearby villages, such as Luxulyan, about the likely dominance of a wind turbine over the landscape.

The balloon was raised to 127 metres and Eden say the turbine would be used to generate electricity for the attraction.
