PREMIER DIVISION (Saturday) Torpoint 0 Saltash 2 SALTASH United moved into second place in the table with the sort of powerhouse display at The Mill that potential champions are made of. Playing Torpoint away from home looked to be a tough proposition, as the team from The Mill approched the game on the back of two fine wins against Liskeard and Parkway in the previous seven days. That mattered not a jot, however, to the Kimberley Stadium outfit, who dominated the match almost from start to finish. 'No complaints as they were the better side on the day,' Torpoint assistant manager Gary Tiffany candidly admitted after the game. To be fair to Torpoint, it was a tough ask to take on a third difficult opponent, especially after their midweek exertions against Parkway on a heavy pitch, which certainly looked to have taken its toll on more than one of their players. That said though, it still needed a Saltash performance and that, according to Ashes manager Kevin Hendy, was what the players produced. 'I thought we were always on top and I have to be delighted with a win, especially away from home, against an in-form, quality, hard- working side,' he said. The Ashes played against the strong wind in the first half, but that seemed to make no difference on the excellent playing surface. Although Torpoint might point to two first-half efforts that were cleared off the line – one either side of Gavin Coulton's 26th-minute opener – those were about the only chances they really created. Coulton's goal was a simple close-range finish after home goalkeeper Joey Syndercombe could only parry a Toby Clark header, from a Danny Lewis corner, and that settled any Saltash nerves. If Torpoint had a comeback in mind for the second half, they were dealt a fatal blow moments before the interval when Thorne doubled the Ashes' lead. Carl Pender threaded a ball through for the Ashes striker to outpace the home defence before firing across Syndercombe from the edge of the penalty box. The second half was, in truth, a bit of an anti- climax, with Saltash content to slip down a gear but still keep a subdued Torpoint at arm's length. As far as Torpoint are concerned, a top-six place is still well within their grasp, just so long as they do not meet too many teams in the same sort of mood as Saltash were on the day.
