a 20-minute service launched this year's Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in Liskeard town centre on Saturday. The service outside Webb's House on The Parade featured 18 members of the Royal British Legion, who listened to an extract from the Remembrance Day service read by Trevor Newbury. Poppies and collection boxes have been put in most Liskeard shops and on Sunday night two male voice choirs raised more than £700 for the appeal by singing songs from Mozart to Celine Dion. Liskerret and Newquay male voice choirs performed at Liskeard Public Hall. Liskerret Choir, compered by Adrian Wilton, performed two new pieces including a Maori song called Pokarekare Ana. They also performed four combined pieces with Newquay choir, which performed My Heart Will Go On, a song from the film Titanic. Launceston Brass Band was also at the event and performed a piece from the Phantom of the Opera. Mr Wilton said: 'It was a full house and a wonderful atmosphere. The people were very receptive. 'It was a great way to kick off the Poppy Appeal and with the money raised it has given a great start.' Future poppy events this weekend include a dance in the Liskeard branch of the Royal British Legion and the Royal British Legion dedicate Field of Remembrance which will be outside the post office in Liskeard.
