Police are urging motorists to take care on moorland roads after a pony was left dying in a road near Pensilva.

The pony, accompanied by a foal, was found seriously injured by a passing motorist at Foredown on the B3254 and died shortly afterwards.

A police spokesman said the driver of a Honda Civic had later made contact in relation to the incident.

The spokesman urged motorists to take care when driving on moorland roads, especially at night.

There have been a number of fatalities involving livestock at Foredown. After a campaign by the Commoners Association, supported by the police, a speed restriction of 40mph was introduced last year.

Patrick and Jane McCarthy, of Horningtops, came across the distressing scene on Monday. Jane said: 'The pony died before the police came and the foal then ran off. It was very upsetting.'
