THERE will be no voting for councillors this May for Liskeard Town Council – as not enough candidates have stepped forward to trigger an election.
Nominations have been received for five candidates for the five seats in the council’s west ward.
However, five members also sit on each of the town’s north and east wards and only four people have put themselves forward for each.
Council members will now need to co-opt two more councillors to fill the vacant seats.
The fact that there will not be an election will save the town council a significant sum of money – the cost of running an election is more than £10,500.
Liskeard Town Council is a statutory body and is the first tier of local government. The council controls a budget of almost £500,000 and is responsible for various buildings and amenities in the town.
