A SIX month old puppy who leapt 70ft off Devils Point after being startled by a loud noise, and was swept across the estuary on to Mount Edgecumbe by the tide, is recovering at home with his owners, lucky to be alive. Toby, a Jack Russell, owes his life to the prompt reaction of the Ministry of Defence Police Marine Unit at Devonport Naval Base who responded to a 999 call made by the puppy's owners, Dave and Sandra Lee. Within ten minutes an MoD Police launch and an inshore rigid inflatable had reached the stranded animal. Toby was perched, shivering with cold and fright on a rock, and was whisked to safety by the RIB and passed on to the launch whose crew wrapped him in a blanket and placed him next to a heater. Once reunited with his grateful owners, he was taken to a vet for emergency treatment, suffering from hypothermia. Mr Lee, a welder, said: 'I am full of praise for the lads from the MoD Police. The current was very strong and Toby was weak and cold. If they hadn't acted so quickly then we are sure Toby would have died.'
