They say they are aware that cannabis and ecstasy are easily obtainable in the town, and that some of the dealers are as young as 14. Both drugs can be bought for as little as £5 on the street.
Looe's Community Police Officers, Barry Mills and Eve Hall are launching a campaign to impress on parents to be more responsible about the whereabouts of their children, so great is their concern.
WPC Hall became a Community Liaison Officer at Looe in October, with responsibility in the areas of drink and drugs and says she has been shocked and concerned by the level of drug taking among some of the town's young people.
She says most of the kids in Looe are great but she is however worried that decent children have been dabbling in drugs because of pressure from their peers.
Both Constables have regularly been patrolling known areas such as the seafront where drug taking occurs, and have apprehended a number of teenagers for being in possession of illegal drugs.
Midnight
'We have found children on the seafront after midnight as young as 12, and are wondering why their parents are allowing them to be out so late at night' said PC Mills.
The Constables are now calling on all parents of teenage children in Looe to be more aware of their youngsters' movements in a bid to try and bring the problem under control.
'It's down to everybody to work together, it's not just down to us' said PC Mills. 'Parents must take more responsibility for their children'.
WPC Hall said it would help a great deal if parents questioned just what they are allowing their children to do and then laid down guidelines and were not persuaded to give in. 'Find out if your children are actually where they said they were going to be, if necessary take them, and if they are going to be in town late at night make sure you collect them at a given time' she said.
WPC Hall also wants to impress on parents that she is available to talk about their worries and to give advice.
'I want them to have the confidence to realise that I would like to help as much as I can. We need to work together as a community' she said.
Parents can contact WPC Hall at Looe Police Station on 01503 266161 between 10am-6pm. If she is unavailable she asks that a message is left which she will reply to as soon as possible.
