A new home has been given planning permission in Charlestown despite concerns over parking problems caused by the popularity of Poldark, writes Richard Whitehouse, local democracy reporter.
Cornwall Council’s central sub-area planning committee approved the plans to build a four-bedroom detached home on land which is currently the garden of a home in Chandlers Walk.
The application was approved despite concerns being raised by St Austell Town Council, local residents and Cornwall councillor Tom French.
Mr French said that he was concerned about the parking arrangements for the new home but also for where construction vehicles would go when the new house is built.
He said that the “popularity of Poldark” had drawn a lot of people to Charlestown where the series has had some scenes filmed and that this had caused parking problems in the area.
This was combined with a high number of people parking at the nearby Penrice Academy to drop off and pick up children to and from school.
Mr French said that he was concerned about where the construction vehicles would go to build the new house.
Vice-chairman Fred Greenslade said: “I don’t really think one dwelling will affect the traffic and movement around the site. I don’t think one property will make that much difference.”
A proposal to grant planning permission was approved by the committee with 10 votes in favour and one against.
