Re-enactments of the moments soldiers left Cornwall to serve in the First World War will take place in a town today (Thursday).

At Saltash Waterside and the town’s Railway Station, actors in costume will reprise the role of the young men who bid farewell and their sweethearts and families who were left behind at home.

Troops from the town and other parts of Cornwall left by rail and by ferry to join regiments that would travel to Western Front in France.

A ceremony will pay tribute to those on both sides who lost their lives, and two commemorative display boards are set to be unveiled.

Around 50,000 poppies have been woven into carpets to be laid out on the ferry slip as the event takes place.

The event at the station is set to start at 2.45pm, with the Waterside ceremony to be staged at 4.30pm.
