Plymouth Combination League

Kelly Bray B 4

University C 2

Kelly Bray ended the season on a high after this resounding victory on Tuesday which enabled them to lift the Division Two title.

After a hectic month which has seen them play many games this win was more the sweeter.

Kelly got off to a good start when Steve Cooke who has really emerged as a class act this season collected the ball out on the right wing. After he evaded two challenges he whipped in a left footed cross which found its way into the back of the net.

Two minutes later they when further ahead when a 25 yarder from Andy McDonald left the 'keeper helpless.

University pulled one back just before half time.

Soon after the restart Jamie Joce got Kelly's third after good work by Cooke. With play swinging from end to end University hit their second after sloppy defending. Joce should have scored soon after but in a one-on-one slammed the ball against the 'keeper.

Near the end Cooke got his second when a lovely piece of skill saw him run half the length of the field and calmly slide the ball past a stranded 'keeper.

Joyous scenes followed as the final whistle blew, Kelly had lifted the League title emulating what the first team had done the previous year.

Manager Garfield Ewings was delighted with his charges and said: "After the disappointment of losing in the Challenge Bowl cup final I am elated the lads have won something after a long hard season."

Thanks must go to first team managers David Ewings and Peter White who made all the first team available to the second team in their quest for honours. Thanks also to all the sponsors and appreciation too to Cliff and Dee Wicket, landlord and landlady of the Swingletree who keep the lads well watered and fed during the winter months.

Thanks too to all the players at the club who have played their part in adding the Division Two title along with Division One and Division Four in the P and D League in the last few seasons.
