TWO of the area's towns are aiming to help stamp out the use of plastic bags by getting shoppers who use them to donate to charity. Saltash Environment Action (SEA) group is launching a Pay For The Bags Day tomorrow, which will see more than 30 shops charging for the use of plastic bags and then donating the proceeds to charity. A community group in Liskeard is also approaching stores asking if they will charge 10 pence for every bag they issue during the month of April and then give the money to Children's Hospice South west. The event in Saltash will start with a parade along Fore Street at 10am to promote the fundraising day which is collecting money for Cornwall Wildlife Trust. SEA's chairman Marianne Beale said Pay For The Bags Day aims to get the people of Saltash thinking in a more environmentally-friendly way. 'We decided we wanted to get everyone to think about re-using the bags that they have,' she said. The fundraising event in Liskeard has yet to be confirmed but Liskeard Litter Ladies will be going to the town's shops asking if they would consider getting everybody who uses a bag to donate to charity. 'It is a very good idea,' said Liskeard's mayor and fundraiser for Children's Hospice South West, Anne Purdon. 'I am hoping the shops and public will get behind the idea. It is about drip-feeding information so people will use something other than plastic bags.' The month of April will also see a number of volunteers take part in litter- picks across the region as part of Clean Cornwall Week which runs from April 12 -20.
