A local Council has objected to the proposed expansion of a petrol station shop on the outskirts of the town.

Morrisons PLC wants to demolish the existing kiosk at the Liskeard forecourt and replace it with a slightly larger building, increasing the internal floorspace from 195 to 210 square metres.

The proposal also includes the relocation of the jet wash facility and air fill /vacuuming station and the creation of 10 new parking spaces.

The planning application can be found on Cornwall Council’s planning portal using the reference PA20/10864.

Members of Liskeard Town Council’s planning committee, referring to the Liskeard Neighbourhood Plan, felt that the scheme would be “an unacceptable expansion of an out of town retail unit”, for which there is no evidence of need.

“There is a lack of clarity on the use of the new enlarged unit and the range of goods it will stock,” said the Council.

“The new unit will exceed 200 m2 and no retail impact assessment has been submitted in accordance with policy TC2 of the Liskeard Neighbourhood Development Plan.”

While the Highways department had raised no objection to the proposal, the Town Council said it continued to have concerns over the safety of the pedestrian crossing on the service road to the supermarket, and said that an expanded parking provision might lead to an increase in traffic arriving at and leaving the forecourt.
