There is strong local support for redeveloping the Liskeard Cattle Market site, with 87% of residents, businesses and local organisations taking part in a public consultation agreeing that regenerating the site would be good for the town’s economy.
But no clear picture has emerged of what options people would like to pursue.
The consultation was part of a study being carried out by urban design and landscape architecture specialists Lacey, Hickie and Caley (LHC) on behalf of Cornwall Council.
Residents, businesses and local organisations were asked for their views on three potential options for the site currently leased by Kivells.
Although there was agreement about the benefit of regenerating the site, the public consultation found no clear preference for one option over the others.
Discussions are continuing between parties, including Cornwall Council, Liskeard Town Council and Kivells, to identify a preferred option.
Sally Hawken, Chair of the Liskeard Cattle Market Working Group and Cornwall Councillor for Liskeard East, said: ‘The consultation generated lively conversations about the future of Liskeard without narrowing things down to one preferred option.
‘The door is still open for multiple possibilities at this point, and what happens next will depend on who might be interested in regenerating the site.
‘Prospective partners are coming forward with proposals that we are now beginning to investigate.’
Jane Pascoe, Mayor of Liskeard, said: ‘The Cattle Market’s town centre location makes it hugely important to Liskeard.
‘Liskeard is proud of its history but also forward looking, and we’re keen that any new development should support the viability of the town centre.’
James Shrubsole, Chair of Liskeard Neighbourhood Plan, said: ‘Regenerating the Cattle Market site has the potential to revive the heart of Liskeard.
‘We know from our Neighbourhood Plan consultations how important this is to people in the town, and we are looking forward to working with a range of partners to develop proposals for the site.’
