A NEW sports and recreation ground is being planned for Liskeard.

The town council has begun negotiations with two landowners with the aim of securing almost 22 acres of land at Roundbury Park, which lies off the main road out of the town towards Pensilva.

While plans are in their very early stages, rugby and football pitches and changing rooms, a running track and a children’s play area are among the facilities proposed.

A cycle hub could be placed at the site as part of a town trail. A cafe was also one of the suggestions made during neighbourhood planning consultations.

It is hoped that community benefit funding associated with new housing developments in Liskeard will provide at least some of the cash to create the facility, said town clerk Steve Vinson.

A project group has been set up, and town councillors, Cornwall Council, the Liskeard and District Sports Association, Liskeard School, and members of the town’s Neighbourhood Planning team will now take the idea forward.
