A plan for seven new detached houses in a village has been given the go-ahead despite objections from the local council.

In Downderry, Robert Keen has received permission to build seven contemporary split-level homes into the hillside on land off the Trereive estate.

Deviock Parish Council had objected to the scheme on several grounds. The council felt that the narrow street was already congested - and that the proposed new houses were too large given the current need for two and three bedroom homes in the village.

The council subsequently agreed to disagree with the recommendation of the case officer James Hills, who approved the scheme under delegated powers.

The planning officer felt that the design of the houses and their positioning set back into the hillside had been very carefully considered, and that their impact on the Area of Outstanding Landscape Value would be acceptable.

Mr Hills also noted that no objection to the plan had been received from the Highways officer.
