PEDESTRIAN improvements on the outskirts of Liskeard are being proposed – and members of the public are being invited to have their say.

A new footway and a new pedestrian island and crossing point on the A390 are planned in order to link Charter Way with the Bubble retail park more safely for those on foot.

Liskeard Town Council’s Active Travel group had done a walking tour of the town in August 2020, and the A390 at Charter Way, between the bus stop and the shops, was identified as a location where an immediate improvement could be made. The Council successfully applied to the Community Network Area highways fund to progress it.

The consultation will be open for people to give their feedback until December 9.

Meanwhile, Town Council members have been out and about gathering views from residents on plans for walking and cycling improvements.

The Active Travel group secured a grant from the Cornwall Council Town Vitality Fund to commission a Local Walking and Cycling Infrastructure Plan, plus designs for improvements to the bus stops and a cycle hub. The contract was awarded to Sustrans, who have started the second phase of public consultation on the draft plans.

“We know that communities are healthier when people can easily shop and get to school and work by bike or on foot. We want to give people more choices about how to travel and to help locals and visitors enjoy our town and the surrounding countryside,” said the Town Council.

“We are working closely with the Looe Valley trails project, which includes a Liskeard loop for a multi-use trail.

“As well as cycling and walking routes, the project also includes looking at options for a cycle hub or active travel hub in the town centre and how the new, longer buses can be better accommodated and linked to cycling and walking.”
