A PLAN to build a new farmer’s house close to Rame Head will once again be considered by members of Cornwall’s East Planning committee tomorrow morning.
When the scheme for a detached house with garage opposite Coastguard Cottages on Ramehead Lane was first submitted by Chris Wilton, it led to a series of events which were divisive in the communities of Kingsand, Cawsand and Millbrook, and which at one point drew national attention: a local campaign group formed to fight the proposals; Cornwall Council approved the new house being built, in the face of planning officer and AONB officer advice; a judicial review was mounted, with a local couple and donors footing the bill via Crowdfunder; A High Court judge ruled that Cornwall Council had not demonstrated clearly the reasons for its decision to approve the house plan, and had not shown how the decision matched up with planning policy; and the approval for planning permission was quashed.
In the meantime a new set of councillors was voted onto the local parish council, and Chris Wilton, who had been chairman, lost his seat.
After a meeting at which Mr Wilton’s architect presented information about the plan and where members of the council and public had opportunity to ask questions and make their views known, the new Maker with Rame Parish Council carried a vote to recommend the planning application be refused. This was in contrast to the previous parish council’s position, which had been to support the plan. The local council will be represented by one of its members, Anne-Marie Sutcliffe, at tomorrow’s planning meeting.
Also speaking at the meeting on behalf of residents of the Rame and St Germans division will be Cornwall Councillor Edwina Hannaford, as the Councillor for the division Kate Ewert has declared an interest.
Speaking to The Cornish Times early last week, Cllr Hannaford said: “This application has been very divisive in the community with feelings running high.
“I am reading all the documentation closely and listening to the community before coming to my view.”
