PLANS to introduce online shopping from a Liskeard supermarket have received the Town Council’s backing.

Grocery giant Morrisons hope to build a new storage and distribution depot for a home shopping service.

The company says that up to 50 jobs, around half of which would be full-time, would be created when the service is introduced.

A planning application has been submitted to Cornwall Council, and local councillors have given their approval to the scheme.

A spokesperson for Liskeard Town Council said: ’Members of the council felt that Morrisons is a good employer of young people, and often give people their first experience of work.

‘There was some concern over the impact of home shopping on the town centre, as well as the impact on the environment. But it was felt that given that other supermarkets already operate home delivery in this area, it was hoped that people might switch to the local service, keeping money and jobs in the town.’

A decision on the plans is due from Cornwall Council by the end of January.
