A BUSINESSWOMAN says she will appeal, after plans for a new fish and chip shop were refused by Cornwall Council.
Claire Bevan had applied for planning permission to create a new takeaway within the Holman Road business park in Liskeard.
The scheme had not been supported by Liskeard Town Council, who said that there was a waiting list for units on the industrial estate - and that a fish and chip shop on the outskirts of town could threaten the vitality of the town centre.
However, Mrs Bevan said that she had earlier applied for two separate premises in Liskeard Town Centre and had been refused by both landlords.
Now the project has been rejected by the local authority. In his report, planning officer George Shirley said: ‘The proposed change of use would result in an adverse economic impact to the surrounding area through the loss of business space within the Liskeard Business Park, which is safeguarded as employment land both in the Cornwall Local Plan and in the draft Liskeard Neighbourhood Development Plan.
‘In addition, the location of the proposed site would result in further economic harm by adversely impacting the viability and vitality of Liskeard town centre.’
Clare Bevan said that she was very disappointed by Cornwall Council’s ruling.
‘We live in a deprived area where people need jobs, and we were going to bring jobs,’ she said.
‘That unit is likely to be taken on by a single occupancy. It’s backward thinking really.’
Mrs Bevan added that she believed that ‘plenty of units’ on the Liskeard Business Park were already operating under a change of use.
