Pigeon racing- Over 90 birds released from Fareham

Pensilva PFC raced from Fareham for the second time this season. The 12 members' 91 birds were liberated at 7.25 am into a light easterly wind, and the speeds the birds did resulted in a few members being caught out.

Taking first and second places were G and P Skews of Pensilva with velocities of 1934.526 and 1874.180 and flying times of 2:11:59 and 2:16:14. Mr and Mrs J Thomas of Darite took third place with a flying time of 2:18:55 to give a velocity of 1864.483. G and P Skews won first 5p and 10p pool, single and two-bird noms. Mr and Mrs J Thomas won second 5p and 10p pools. Next week's race is from Rennes.

The Saltash Pigeon Club raced from Dover in Kent last weekend. The birds were released at 0730 in a south-easterly wind and a fast race was anticipated. During the 248 mile journey the birds ran into heavy rain and a thunderstorm.

The leading bird was a yearling cock bird which covered the journey in 4:35:08, recording an average velocity of 1584.660 yards per minute, just over 54 mph. This meant the first win of the season for Messrs R Mugridge and S Woolley. Seven members sent 83 birds to the race and, despite the conditions, returns were reported as very good, but rather scattered.
