The first open meeting of the recently-formed Friends of Kilminorth Woods was held last week in Looe's Barbican Methodist Church, and a photographic competition was judged. The Friends was formed six months ago with the aims of promoting the conservation, protection and improvement of the Local Nature Reserve in the woods at Kilminorth. The meeting began with an illustrated talk entitled Secrets of a Wildlife Photographer by David Chapman of Hayle, which proved both enlightening and highly entertaining. He also judged the competition for members' and non-members' pictures of the woods, and donated a framed photograph for the overall winner. David said he was impressed by both the high quality and variety of the subject matter and interpretation of the 63 entries. The junior winner was seven-year-old Celine Crowder, from St Neot, and the overall winner was Lyn Winter, of Nomansland, for her atmospheric black and white photograph. Highly commended certificates were awarded to Derek Dove, Kathy Jones and Christine Spooner, all of East Looe, and Sue Crowder of St Neot. The audience was given the chance to vote for its favourite entry, selecting the panoramic view of woodland refleations by Derek Dove.
