A DISABLED man has been told he can no longer volunteer at a social club because of 'health and safety issues'. The Constitutional Club in Liskeard told Russell Goddard, a kitchen and bar assistant, last week that his services were not needed any more – angering some club members. More than 100 people have now signed a petition in a bid to get him re-instated. It is expected to be handed in to the club's management on Monday. 'It is disgusting the way I have been treated. I am absolutely fed up with it,' said Russell, 46, of Liskeard. 'My loyalty is and has always been with the club but I feel very unfairly treated.' Russell, who has learning difficulties, claims he can perform all his jobs – which include collecting glasses, making sure the bar is well stocked and helping in the kitchen – to a high standard. He also has, under health and safety guidelines, a food hygiene certificate. But Paul Cummins, chairman of the Constitutional Club, said. 'Russell used to help as a volunteer but because of health and safety issues we could not have a volunteer doing the kind of work he was doing.' Mr Cummins declined to discuss the details of the decision.
