Penn Cornwall Tennis League - Narrow win over holders clinches title for Sunnybanks

Sunnybanks A are the new Men's Premier Division champions following their close 6-4 win over the holders Redruth A.

Ryan Fern and Steve Lobb were unbeaten for Redruth, but Sunnybanks gained the winning two points by a margin of just four games overall.

By collecting a maximum 20 points from their matches at home to Liskeard A and Penzance A, Truro A now move into runners-up position with Redruth three points behind with a match in hand. Penzance A gained what could be a vital 10 points in their fight against relegation with an easy 10-0 win over St Austell A. St Agnes A now lead Division 1 after a 10-0 success against bottom side, Bodmin A, and an 8-3 margin over Penzance B. Sunnybanks B completed their programme with a 10-2 win against Penzance B and must now wait to see if any of the teams behind them can gain sufficient points from outstanding matches to wrest the runners-up and promotion position from them.

In a match in which two teams that could catch them were involved, Truro B took over third position with a convincing 10-2 victory over Veryan A. Second placed Wadebridge A came a cropper against St Austell A in Division Two East, going down 3- 8.

With Launceston getting the better of Bude B 6-4, those three teams are all level on points behind the Wadebridge side who have played one additional match and are ahead by 12 points leaving Liskeard B a further eight points ahead and now looking the likely champions of this Division.

In Division Three East, Bude C took a major step towards the title by gaining maximum points in home and away fixtures against Looe. Newquay are now challenging Bodmin B for the runners-up position after their 8-3 success against Truro D. The G. Millatt/M. King pairing excelled for the winners in this match.

In the Ladies Premier Division, a strong Bodmin side gained a good 10-2 win over Truro A whose title chances may now have been extinguished. However, Bodmin's likely main rivals in the relegation battle could well be St Austell A who did their chances of escape a fillip with a 9-2 win at Truro B followed by the collection of 5 points in a 5-7 reverse at Bude A who gained the overall win on the strength of only 3 games extra being won during the evening.Jn Division 1 East, despite struggling to beat lowly Bude D 6-4, St Austell C have assured themselves of at least runners-up to Bude B who only need six points from their last two matches to guarantee the title. In Division 2 East, Liskeard gained their first win of the season by 9-2 against Looe who themselves tasted victory in style when a much stronger team was able to defeat the Division's leaders, St Austell D. In this match, Margaret Jackman and Karen Shepley were the star performers.
