Callington-based food firm, Ginsters, has run into trouble with the Football Association after launching a special 'Three Lions' sandwich pack to support England's World Cup hopes.
The F.A. has insisted it owns the 'Three Lions' name and wants production stopped.
Ginsters, famous for its pasties and other products, has responded and Larry File, Marketing Controller, said: 'We have been involved in legal dealings and have responded to the FA with the decision that we do not believe we are infringing on any legal trademarks.
'The sandwiches were a limited edition and only supposed to be on sale for a few weeks on the run up to the 'big match' between England and Greece and since that time sales have been dropping off as we expected. So production will be stopped soon anyway.'
A spokesperson from The Football Association commented: 'We are well aware of the situation and are currently deciding whether to pursue the situation further.'
The 'Three Lions' triple pack, wrapped in the flag of St George, contains sandwiches made from ingredients that reflect food associated with opposing nations: Germany, Finland and Greece in time for the England v Greece, and Germany v Finland games held a few weeks ago. The German sandwich consists of smoked reformed ham, emmental and cheddar cheese with mustard mayonnaise on oatmeal bread; prawns with sour cream and dill seasoned mayonnaise on white bread makes the Finnish contribution; and feta and soft cheese with greek yoghurt, cucumber, tomato and onion in sun dried tomato bread, the Greek. Cases of the sandwiches were sent to the England team and its management.
Larry said: 'That in itself illustrates our confidence that we are not causing any problems regarding trademarks but we also thought it would be a good morale booster for the team and a message of support for them from us.'
