THE first traffic warden to be based in a town since the summer took up his new post this week with the warning: 'The honeymoon period is over.' Ex-navy officer Dave Billing is vowing to put an end to poor parking in Liskeard, saying that five months without a full-time traffic warden in the town has led to 'complacency among some drivers'. Mr Billing, 41, is aware that there have been parking problems since former warden Bob Ainslow left to become part of the police force in Looe. 'I will be trying to bring some order to this town because there are a lot of places that are really bad,' said Mr Billing. 'I know where the problem areas are, the Parade, Barn Street, the taxi ranks, for example. 'And Bay Tree Hill has its problems too, and it won't be a car park anymore. 'It's such a small, narrow place, especially if you have got two cars parked on both sides.' Increasing traffic in the town has brought serious problems in recent months, especially during the run-up to Christmas. And the new traffic warden insists drivers will not be given a respite period. 'People know where to park and where not to park, I am just doing my job,' he said. 'I am a local boy, born and bred in Liskeard, so a lot of people know me, but I wont let that put me off doing my job.' Mr Billing spent 24 years in the navy and admits he never had any ambition to become a traffic warden until recently. 'I was walking with my two girls through Liskeard and we had to move off the pavement because a car was parked there and we couldn't get around it,' he said. 'And I thought "this is dangerous, something needs to be done".' Mr Billing will be working 32-and-a-half hours a week in Liskeard and the surrounding villages. He will also be making himself known to traders and discussing any special delivery times that could result in congestion. After completing his full training, Mr Billing is spending the next few weeks working around the area with other traffic wardens before patrolling on his own.
