Liskeard's new Pannier Market opens on May 25.

Two local residents, Katrina Dawe and Steve Barrett, and a host of volunteers have given their time to repair, paint and clean the building ready for the opening. Paint and materials have been donated by Homebase and signage has been provided by Liskeard Signs and Trophies.

The Co-operative Stores have given Revitalise Liskeard CIC (community interest company) a year's rent free to enable the market to start. Lloyds Bank also helped with an overdraft for the initial set-up costs.

The hope is that if the market is supported by the people of Liskeard it will generate more footfall to the town and will attract new traders to the market.

Katrina, director of Revitalise Liskeard CIC, said: 'A lot of traders from both the local and wider area have invested in the market by trading here because they believe in the viability of the town. It is now up to the people to also invest in their town by using the community-based market.'

Local taxi company Quick Kabs is also investing in the idea by providing advertising and a free

phone, within the market.

Steve, who is also a director of Revitalise Liskeard CIC, added: 'We are still looking for more investment and grants to enable us to offer the types of services and shopping experience that will help to increase footfall to the town.

'We are also still looking for new traders, especially local people or young entrepreneurs who want to start a new business and trade from the market.' he said.
