A MYSTERIOUS piece of debris recovered from the sea 10 miles south of Looe has puzzled the town’s RNLI volunteers.

Lifeboat crew were tasked by Falmouth Coastguard yesterday morning to look for a large piece of material in the water which had been reported by a local fishing vessel.

Setting out just after 8am, the Looe RNLI crew arrived at the location given and found a large hatch panel that the fishing vessel’s crew had tied to a dan marker.

After a sweep of the area to check for any further debris, the panel was recovered onto the lifeboat, as it could have presented a shipping hazard.

’Our crew are puzzled by the panel, with all their fishing and boating experience they have not seen anything similar before,’ said a Looe RNLI spokesperson.

’There are no markings on the panel, which is made of wood, covered with fibre glass, carbon fibre and has a bracket for hydraulics.’
