ADVENTURER Pete Goss began the next chapter in his illustrious career on Saturday, when his historic tribute to a Cornish fishing boat was officially launched in Millbrook. The Spirit of Mystery, standing at a majestic 37ft tall and weighing in at nine tonnes, will begin an epic journey to Melbourne in Australia in late October when he and his three-man crew attempt to replicate the voyage undertaken by seven Newlyn fishermen who sailed their boat – Spirit – to Australia in 1854. The crew is made up of Andy Maidment (Pete's brother- in-law), son Eliot and brother Andy. Proud of his Cornish roots, Pete's boat was built by a small team of constructors led by Chris Rees, using mostly fallen Cornish oak. Pete said: 'It is another boat-build and epic sailing voyage, but it is completely different to anything I have done before. 'Here we are on the brink of another exciting adventure that has the added element of history which I find I am really enjoying. The kids say that it is because I am getting older and balder and I suspect they are right.' There was plenty of fun and entertainment at Millbrook to celebrate the official launch and naming of the lugger on Saturday evening. A live band played throughout, and there were stalls, a barbecue, a bouncy castle and a climbing wall with people travelling from across the region.
