A VETERAN whose experiences led him to become a mentor to others is among the latest recipients of the Cornwall High Sheriff’s “Unsung Heroes” award.

Ossie Glover of Battling On, the Callington-based Community Interest Company providing life-changing support to Cornwall’s most vulnerable people, was recognised for his inspirational support for veterans as they struggle to make the transition to civilian life.

A former Royal Marine, Ossie initially signed up to Battling On for help with his own challenges, before going through the training to become a mentor himself.

He worked tirelessly though the first lockdown to support veterans, giving up evenings and weekends to ensure that in crisis, they always had someone to turn to.

He has also run the local Marine Cadets for 10 years.

Presenting Ossie with his award, High Sheriff of Cornwall Kate Holborow said: “The very best mentor is often someone who has experienced the same struggles and challenges and come through the other side. Ossie is a perfect example of this.

“So understated, charming and charismatic, he has obviously delivered ground breaking results for the Battling On community.

“It was a privilege to meet Ossie and some of the Battling On veterans last week.”
