Plans to demolish two houses and replace them with two blocks of apartments along one of the most expensive residential roads in Cornwall have attracted opposition, writes Richard Whitehouse, local democracy reporter.

Developer Acorn Blue has applied for planning permission to pull down two houses in Sea Road, Carlyon Bay, near St Austell, and build 23 apartments in their place.

The plans are due to go before Cornwall Council’s central sub-area planning committee tomorrow (Monday) and have been recommended for approval.

However the plans have been opposed by Carlyon Parish Council and local residents who say the development would be out of character and there is no need for more apartments.

It is the latest in a number of applications which have come forward in recent years to pull down houses along the private road and replace them with modern blocks of flats and apartments.

The proposed site is next door to the former Cliff Head Hotel which was demolished and replaced with retirement flats.

Opponents to the Acorn Blue scheme say many of those apartments remain unsold along with several in another block of flats farther along the road.

A design and access statement submitted with the application states: ‘Sea Road has a mix of properties ranging from single storey properties through to four storey large apartment buildings and hotel accommodation. Carlyon Bay, and in particular Sea Road, has a history of evolving architectural presence of styles with a strong link to art deco, with a number of 1930s art deco houses including the Grade II listed Gull Rock house.

‘Our proposal is to create two art deco influenced buildings, containing a total of 23 apartments within a landscaped designed gardens.’
