LOOE has been given the go-ahead by Cornwall Council to hold regular markets, as part of the plans to help strengthen the town's economy.

East Looe Town Trustees will be making an offer to traders and would-be traders to help shape a new town centre open air market in the Rose Garden next to the Guildhall, which it is hoped will be in operation in time for the main tourist season.

But before any pitches are formally offered they will be asking potential traders to write in with their own ideas. The trustees say they have promised that they will hold the market in a way which will protect the attractive space for the public – who may just want to sit and enjoy it.

The initiative dovetails with new planning guidance designed to strengthen town centres and the Mary Portas Independent Review into the future of local high streets. As a first step those interested should contact the Trust office in the Guildhall and request a copy of a plan showing the extent of the site.

Stall design could range between table top and traditional/professional. Stalls must be removed on a daily basis, and trading from vehicles and road trailers is not envisaged.

The trustee coordinating the work, cllr. Brian Galipeau, said: 'Our approach is to ensure a level playing field for all, and to listen to potential stall holders. This is an opportunity for existing Looe businesses, well- established traders, and importantly for new start-ups.'
