Online cookery, keep fit and story times for children will be part of a town’s concerted response to kep morale up during the lockdown period.

In Looe, more than 900 people have signed up to a coronavirus support Facebook page and the town council has mobilised an army of ’aunties and uncles’ to ensure that the elderly and vulnerable are looked after.

Mayor Martin Gregory said: ’So much has changed since my message last week and the situation has rapidly moved on – however it never ceases to amaze me how our community pulls together to help each other out. The residents of Looe and the surrounding areas have rapidly formed one of the strongest and most proactive volunteer networks in Cornwall.’

This week, leaflets were being distributed door to door to every address in Looe, said the mayor, and call-handlers have been recruited to field calls from people in self-isolation. Volunteers would be allocated on a street-by-street basis to ensure no-one ’fell through the cracks’.

’Last week I held a productive collaboration meeting with key Looe organisations to ensure we are all working together to give the best help and support to our community,’ said Cllr Gregory.

’I would also like to thank our local businesses, so many of whom are now offering free local deliveries. Our thoughts are with those businesses who are currently unable to trade and their employees. We will be including business updates on our website and will be developing a dedicated Looe Business group on LinkedIn to enable businesses to keep in touch with each other.

’We are refreshing our Facebook page and setting up Instagram and Twitter to ensure that the community are kept informed of developments. We will also be posting key information on the Looe Town Council notice boards and will continue to distribute leaflets whenever there is a significant change.’
