I'VE had my house in Looe for nearly 30 years. The town is a lovely place with some really nice people living in it. In the past, I used to feel like an outsider/ upcountry man, but though I'll never be a local, for I'm not Cornish, I feel at home here. So it is sad to read about local people arguing about the supply of diesel to the fishing fleet in the port. For a while, I fished in Essex – I had to drag every item across a beach. I was worn out before I got fishing. How easy Looe has it! There is something wrong when local boats go to other ports for landing and diesel. Yes, I know tides and price go hand in hand and no fishing is easy, never was. I've watched the decline in fishing, fewer boats at Looe, quotas etc. But the fishing fleet is the heart of Looe, it made Looe. I've made good money in my life. I've had to admit I'm wrong also. I have had to apologise a lot for my mistakes – big people can. Surely, the harbour board and all concerned can now shove the past away and simply talk anew, clean up that fuel tank area, pull together, wipe the slate clean. So, mistakes have been made, it can all be put right. It is really sad to hear of the conflict about the fuel. Someone just has to be big enough to hand out an olive leaf. It's not hard.
