The Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Lady Mary Holborow, unveiled a plaque in Saltash Guildhall on Saturday to mark the official opening of the refurbished building.
Lady Mary and her husband, Geoffrey, were welcomed by Saltash mayor Mona Tomaszewska-Honywill and her consort, her husband John, and the chairman of the town council's development committee, Steve Tait. Also present were local MP Colin Breed, and his wife Janet, the architect Robert Winter and his wife and representatives of contractors Coopers of Plymouth who had carried out the refurbishment work.
Lady Mary explained how, through funding from English Heritage and the Lottery, the Guildhall had been restored to its former glory. As she unveiled the plaque Saltash town band played a fanfare, followed by a selection of music including 'Congratulations'. Later, while refreshments were served by Saltash Leo club young people, Edward Jacobs played the piano.
Saltash young citizen of the year, national St John cadet Daniel Edgcumbe, presented Lady Mary with a bouquet of flowers. She was given a print of Saltash by the mayor who also presented a glass decanter and two glasses to Mr Winter. An engraved glass vase and a bouquet also went to town clerk, Marilyn Small, for her town council work.
Other guests included the l999 Citizen of the year Graham Clatworthy and town councillors.
