OAPs welcome supermarket

I was delighted to read in last week's issue about our new town councillor Mr Les Young who has publicly offered to organise a campaign for a Tesco store to be built at Polean area, a 'disaster area' for many, many years.

Tesco has stated they would improve the road access to the Millpool area which would help traffic flow, especially during the holiday season.

As secretary of Age Concern, Looe, I know many of the old folk express their wish to be able to enjoy such a facility on their doorstep.

Vested interests, such as the Chamber of Trade, are naturally against it and suggest the town's trade would suffer.

May I say, if that is the case, the die was cast many years ago when, only a few miles away in Liskeard, two such superstores, Somerfield and Safeway, were opened.

Recent proof was the closure of the last butcher's shop in East Looe - there were three once. But that is the way of life these days and many accept it.

I suggest quite a large number of shoppers with cars, including, if I may say, a few of our traders and councillors, travel for their weekly shopping into Liskeard. Why shouldn't those without cars, or old and disabled unable to bus it, have the privilege of such economical and variable choice shopping in a superstore on their doorstep. Even the holiday makers would do their shopping in Looe and spend on other types of shopping in Looe shops.

Looe is a holiday town. There are more pasty shops, take-aways, tea shops, coffee bars, gift shops, fish and chip shops and pubs than anywhere else in SE Cornwall. Crowded in the Summer; during the winter nearly all the shops are closed and Looe is like a ghost town. At least Tesco may cheer it up. Good luck, Mr Young.
