THE traditional fireworks at midnight in Looe on New Year's Eve have been cancelled this year.
The decision was 'reluctantly' taken by Looe Town Council's environmental committee meeting when it was reported no one had come forward to take charge of this year's event, which involves a lot of organisation.
Deputy mayor Armand Toms said the previous organiser, who had done sterling work for the town, had stood down, and, unfortunately, no one had come forward to replace her.
'At least £2,500 to £3,000 has to be raised for a good display,' said cllr Toms, 'but that is not the main concern. The most important thing is the organisation on the night. About 20 marshals are needed as there are 3,000 to 4,000 people on the seafront. Health and safety is a prime factor and the person in charge is liable if anything goes wrong and the right procedures are not in place.'
Cllr Toms added that people are also needed for the clean-up operation on Banjo Pier and the seafront early in the morning.
Volunteer
'If people would like to see the fireworks put on for this year it would be very helpful for them to come forward and volunteer their services,' he said. 'Then maybe we could save the display. Given the time factor it is urgent that people let the town council know as soon as possible if they are willing to give their time.'
