TWO attacks in Saltash have left residents being warned to be careful when walking alone at night, and to avoid unlit areas of the town.

Last Friday muggers struck as a man walked over a footbridge near Leanway, although he was able to fight them off.

The second incident involved a woman in her late 20s being grabbed from behind as she walked in the same spot. She was also able to fight her way free, and immediately called the police.

The footbridge is situated between Cowdrey Close and Leanway. Both incidents happened at night, the first, in which the victim was a man in his 40s, at about 11.30pm and the other just after midnight.

Police have given a description of two men following the incidents, these aged between 18-20, both between 5' 11" and 6' 1" tall and of medium build. One had short, tidy fair hair with the other wearing dark clothing and a baseball cap with a Nike logo. It is thought that one might have suffered facial cuts in the first incident.

The police, who say the attacks are unusual for Saltash, add that the attackers ran off towards Trelawney Road after the man fought them off.

Police in Saltash staged an operation last weekend in the area around Old Ferry Road after residents complained of motorists racing down a residential street which has only a 30mph limit. A video was set up secretly in a house to film the drivers, some allegedly 'boy racers', and more than a dozen drivers were stopped.
