A new hot food takeaway restaurant in Liskeard has been given approval.

The application, from G and J Poulton, was for an outlet at Unit 3 of the Pondbridge House complex, Cannon Hill. The case was discussed recently by Caradon councillors, having been deferred from the September 9 meeting of the planning sub committee (west) to enable greater contact with nearby residents.

This had led to concerns being registered from 39 residents living in Cannon Street, Cannon Hill and Church Street. Concern was also expressed by the manager of the Caradon Care and Repair unit, next door to the proposed food retailer, and these worries were endorsed by ward member, Dawn Austin.

The planned change of use of the empty property was outlined to councillors by area planner, Marshall Plummer, who said the application complied with policies related to vacant premises and their retail use. The meeting heard the hours of business would be from 11am to 8pm daily, with the outlet closed on Sundays.

Tony Powell felt that on planning grounds the application must be given approval.

He had doubts about the viability of the location, but supported the applicants' enthusiasm.

His Liskeard colleague, Ernest Arundell, supported the proposal and it was noted carbon filtration equipment will be installed as a ventilation system. Worries about waste disposal, litter and other possible nuisances will be covered by health and safety conditions monitored by Caradon's environmental service.
